Google algorithm updates aim at quality. Google Penguin update was announced on April 24, 2012 with a motive to penalize websites, that used black hat SEO techniques to manipulate search engine rankings and breached Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. The penalties included lowering of the websites ranking indulged in such malpractices.
Google uses these updates in order to decide, if information passed on to visitors is trustworthy, genuine and of good quality giving a good user experience. Penguin 4.0 is the fourth major release to the Penguin algorithm; this update went live in all languages on September 23, this year.
Real-time updates an important aspect.
Penguin now is a part of Google’s core algorithm. Previously the sites affected by Penguin would get refreshed periodically. But now with the Penguin 4.0 update, data is refreshed real-time, which means that the affected page will see changes at a faster pace. Infact it will take effect shortly after the web crawler recrawls and reindexes a page. With the real-time aspect of Penguin, both positive and negative changes will appear at a much faster rate. Google says that “the length of time between seeing Penguin changes will be roughly the length of time it takes to crawl and re-index a page”.
Google’s Penguin update comes with a more granular approach, instead of affecting ranking of the website in total; Penguin 4.0 now lowers the spam by targeting individual pages depending upon the spam signals.
